Phonehenge

Phonehenge is a monument to the mobile phones we’ve cherished and then thrown away. From afar its megalithic structure might recall a trilith from Stonehenge. Closer up, the three stones are clearly enlarged cast-concrete mobile phones—the vertical BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Motorola’s MicroTAC 9800X flip phone hold up a Nokia 3310—with pixelated screens made of glass mosaic tiles.

In one light, the three phones illustrate some of the most significant steps in the evolution of mobile phones; in another, the sculpture borrows the mystique of Stonehenge to invite the audience to reflect on the role of these obsolete technological artifacts. Inspired by Stonehenge as a place of connection between sky and earth, Phonehenge functions as a symbolic portal. It invites us to link memories from the past to the present and carry them forward into the future, while honoring the natural and human resources that have been sacrificed for consumer technologies, notably the mining process of cobalt.
